I had some old bath tubs kicking around from house renovations and decided to make a smoker out of them.  It worked surprisingly well.

I put one bathtub on concrete bricks and put a grilling basket over the drain.  My concern was the drain, which would act as an air intake vent, might get clogged up with coals and ash.  Putting the grilling basket over top ensured and even distribution of air to the hot coals.

I then got some charcoal going over top of the grilling basket.  Once it was going well I pilled on a bunch of apple wood and sugar maple.  I prefer apple wood and sugar maple over hickory because it produces a much more mellow flavor.

I put my grill in across the edge of the bath tub, put my meat on, and then just flipped the second bathtub over top as a lid making sure to put the drain of the second bath tub as far away from the fire as possible.

I’ll have devise some way to control the airflow through the drains/vents but for this first cook I just used a brick.  I was actually able to get a fairly even cooking temperature where the meat was.  The temperature varied between 225 degrees Fahrenheit and 310 degrees.  The temperature in the coals was over 1000 degrees and the highest temperature outside the tub close to the fire was 500 degrees.  Not exactly safe if you have kids around, but fun none the less.
