I just got back yesterday from a trip to Portugal and Spain – absolutely amazing trip. One of the digital cameras we brought, a Samsung PL 100, somehow the memory card got corrupted. I’ve spent the majority of the evening trying some tools to try to recover the images.

Looking at the memory card directly on a PC, I could only see 65 files and 74 folders and all had gobledeegook kinds of names like ⌡”6Vô,▌Nß.”l║” and all had a zero file size.

Looking at the memory card directly on a Mac, I could see 2 folders and 251 files but again, they all had gobledeegook names and all had a zero file size.

The first tool I tried is Zero Assumption Recovery.  ZAR is a free tool for recovering image files.  It was able to recover 140 images and 3 movie files.

The next tool I tried is PC Inspector Smart Recovery.  This one is also free for recovering image files.  It was able to recover 140 images as well but no movies.

Just for fun I wanted to see if I just used plain Jane disk repair tools on the card.  The first one I tried is the Apple Disk Utility Repair tool.  It didn’t recover anything.  I was really surprised.

I then restored the disk from an image I had of it and tried using Microsoft’s Check Disk utility.  It recovered the 140 image files no problem.

ZAR was the clear winner.
